Immortalize with Portraits - Elaine

Title: The Joy of Reading
Size: 9 by 12 inches
This unfinished portrait shows my mom, enjoying a book on the couch.

I wasn't really sure how this project was going to go, but I feel like it's come a long way since that empty sheet of paper I started with. :)

I could, of course, spend this post moaning over the many things I feel I could have done better, but instead, I'm going to try and keep this positive.

I've never specialized in realism or anything involving a paintbrush, to be honest, but I really enjoyed working on this painting. I only had six colors of paint to start out (red, yellow, blue, green, white and ochre), so I had a lot of fun trying to create the perfect tones by mixing a bit of this and a dab of that. I didn't quite as far in with this painting as I would have liked, so I'm labeling it as "unfinished" for now and hoping I can find time to come back through and continue building up contrast.

All in all, I like how this painting went.

  1. Wow! The texture and style here are so great! The color, contrast and even the stance give the work so much character! Beyond that, it's just a great piece of art that's really sound!

  3. Unfinished? This is a really beautiful piece, unfinished or not! I love the textures you've created on every aspect of this painting, right from the folds of the jeans to the skin and knuckles on her hand. What a masterful use of brush strokes and controlled paint. I know it's unfinished, but when you work on it again, I'd definitely suggest creating a bit more contrast with some of the forms on her face so that it pops out more and doesn't blend in with itself. All in all, this is a wonderful job.

  4. I love the amount of detail you've put into this piece! You really made the portrait of the person you chose stand out! Although the background isn't complete, and not as much refinement was placed into the mouth, the grandeur of the piece compensates for what it lacks. Great job on this one!

  8. I really like how you made the positioning look so natural. Good job distinguishing the blues from the couch with the pants.
