Creating a Landscape - Aspens (Part 2)

Title: Aspens
Size: 30 by 24 inches
This (still unfinished) piece was done in water based oils and portrays a forest of quaking aspens in fall.

I normally don't like doing landscapes, but this piece was really fun. I didn't plan or sketch out any of this painting, which is rather different than how I normally paint. This was just painting colors on top of brush strokes on top of colors, which was actually very enjoyable.

The longer I'm in art classes the more I realize that I seem to have a fondness for projects that soak up time like a sponge. It's always like "Okay, I'm going to throw another 2 hours at my canvas. I'll let you know if there's any visible progress!" Longer projects always feel like more of an adventure, as you have to discover the picture as you go. In any painting or drawing you never quite know exactly how it will turn out until you finish, and with a little sketch you know within the hour how it turned out, but on the long projects you learn about it as you go. You see it shaping up differently than you imagined, but still right somehow.

I'd still like to to add more leaves, but overall, I'm happy with how this project is coming together. :)

  3. I really love the way that you got the aspens to look and I also love the color and the variety of the color of the trees leaves. I also really like your painting because I have been out in places like that where the leaves are so many different colors and the surrounding area just feels calm and peaceful and that is how your painting looks to me. Well done :)

  5. The different hues you used for the grass are really beautiful, you can almost feel it when you look at it. The natural curving of your trees catches the viewer's eye and leads them throughout the painting. Really gorgeous work!

  7. This is such a gorgeous landscape! The colors are blended beautifully, the color variance is very appealing and the detail is spectacular! I think it would've looked nice with orange mixed with the yellow in the leaves as blue (sky) is orange's complementary color.

  13. This is really good. It's more detailed and complex than the other paintings I have seen. It's really realistic, and it actually looks like it has some depth. I can't really find anything you could improve on it.

  19. WOOOOHOOOO!!!! Can I just say thank you!?! Thank you for putting time into making this superb!! First thing I love is how clean it is! All the colors on the trees are toned well, you made the sky look realistic(in fact the whole painting realistic!) and added layers to your painting. Then finishing up with that fall/autumn look by making the red and green leaves on the ground blend! LOVE IT!!
